Impact of Industrial Farming
This quarter I learned about Biogeochemical cycling, Food history, Industrialized Agriculture and Meat production. I created an environmental final project with my friends. It is a booklet that contains five topics which are water use, relationship to droughts, water shortages, deforestation to create grassland for grazing cows, overfishing in oceans, methane, CO2, and nitrous oxide released in farming, relationship to climate change and human health issue. Doing this final project can use information from every topics that I have learned from quarter one. I also research more information from the internet. My perspective on this booklet as final project is very good. I very proud of it because I like how me and my friend intently work as group, we all put high effort on this project. Moreover, the way that we decorate is looked beautiful and interesting and information is clear and easy to understand. I think the booklet have no mistakes because it is very satisfying.
I have research about deforestation in this project. I learned that forest is a very important part of living organisms and ecosystem because it produces essential oxygen and reduces the carbon dioxide. We have lost 18.7 million acres of forest due to deforestation. Forest can help absorb and store large amount of water from heavy rain. The causes of deforestation are mostly from human which are clear cutting down trees for agricultural expansion, livestock ranching, urban development and illegal selling logs. Deforestation affects many parts of ecosystem. It can lead to organism extinction, erosion of soil, natural disaster such as flood and drought, and release greenhouse gas emission. We can help prevent this problem by plant more trees, stop cutting down trees, government should plan where will they cut the trees and use renewable energy instead burning trees for fuel. I agree that we should help save our planet. Researching more information about what we can use instead of trees and where can we use that land for farming or agriculture expansion so we don’t have to clear the forest land.
By completing this project, I have demonstrated three of the ESLOs which are strategic learners, innovative thinkers and articulate communicators. It is related to strategic learners because I use my computer to do my research about deforestation, innovative thinkers because I put those information that I have researched into my booklet that I have decorated beautifully and articulate communicators by explaining my topics to other people. My strength is that I’m very good at decorating my booklet because I’m a very creative person and I have made the booklet colorful and eye catching. My weakness is to research information of the topic and paraphrase them because I’m not good at reading a lot of information from articles. I can improve myself by reading more books and do more research about other topics so I can improve my reading and paraphrasing skills. I have learned about myself as a learner by knowing that I like to study about wildlife and climate change very much. As a person I have learned that I’m a decent person because I love animals and I don’t eat a lot of meat.
